Tohoku University Technology: Method for Improving the Saccharification of Plants: T24-049

Utilize the non-edible parts of crops as a source of energy.

A biorefinery that utilizes biomass as a raw material for chemical products and as an energy source is a technology aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Among the biomass that is expected to be utilized, cellulose-based biomass poses challenges due to its structural difficulty in decomposition, making saccharification, which is a prerequisite for the production of chemical products and energy, difficult. Associate Professor Ito and others from the Graduate School of Agricultural Science at Tohoku University have developed a method to improve saccharification by introducing the cytokinin synthase gene, a factor that suppresses plant aging, into grasses. In this method, the gene is introduced through intragenesis, and since foreign DNA does not remain in the plant genome at the final stage of breeding, it is not subject to the restrictions of the Cartagena Protocol.
